What is Insulation?

NZ Collage

Insulation is a material that will increase the thermal resistance of a homes walls, floors and roof. When it is used in the external fabric of a building, such as walls, roofs and floors, it will help to keep a building cool in summer and warm in winter. It can also provide acoustic performance by reducing sound transfer from the outside to the inside of building or between adjoining rooms. Insulation works hard at preventing heat transfer, so when you use heating to keep a house warm during winter it will act as a barrier to stop the hot air escaping through the walls and roof, to the cold air outside.

Therefore, a building that has been fully insulated can help reduce excessive use of appliances to help maintain a comfortable internal temperature. The insulation will prevent hot air from escaping a building during winter or hot air entering a building during summer.
